MALIBU, Calif. - Recent Pepperdine graduate and women's golf alum Liv Cheng has been chosen as the West Coast Conference's nominee for the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year award, the organization announced today.
Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) graduated in April with a degree in economics and a 3.53 grade-point average.
She was a four-year member of the Waves' women's golf team and played a key role in the Waves' four consecutive conference titles. Pepperdine competed in NCAA Regional play all four years and finished 21st at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
The NCAA Woman of the Year award takes into account service and leadership, academics and athletic achievement.
More than 120 conference honorees across Division I, II and III have been chosen, including 52 at the Division I level. The Woman of the Year selection committee will announce the top 10 honorees in each division in early September, and then nine finalists (three from each division) will be picked at the end of September. The 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced in October.
"Liv has been a tremendous student-athlete at Pepperdine both in the classroom and on the golf course," Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. "She has worked very hard over her college career and is very deserving of this nomination."
Cheng became the 10th Wave to earn All-WCC first team honors all four years. She appeared in 118 rounds, a figure that ranks 10th all-time at Pepperdine. She was named to the WGCA All-West Region team in 2012. Her best career finish was a tie for second place at the 2014 WCC Championships, and she was in the lineup for 10 team tournament titles over her four years.
Academically, Cheng was a three-time Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar, a three-time WCC All-Academic first team selection and a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar. She's just the second Wave to earn WGCA All-American Scholar status three times.
